Ruffec and Angouleme
Details: Relax in this sunny region of France, in our beautifully renovated and spacious village house which sleeps up to 8 people in 3 bedrooms. The house is situated in a quiet, rural village in the heart of the rolling countryside of the Charente region, with its vines of cognac and pineau producers and field after field of sunflowers for you to explore. The house is 5 minutes from the pretty town of Mansle and the beautiful, meandering Charente River. Ideally placed to make a fantastic holiday for families, or for couples holidaying together.
As soon as you walk into the house you begin to appreciate the wealth of character, yet you can see that it benefits from all the comforts of a modern home. We are new owners and 90% of the furniture, and all linen, towels, kitchen equipment and electrical goods were newly bought in October 2005. All rooms look out onto the sunny, south facing, courtyard style garden and both the kitchen and lounge have direct access to it. The courtyard is is large, fully enclosed and private - the perfect place for you to relax with a book and a glass or two of the local wine, engage in long outdoor family meals, or to cool off in the private, above-ground pool.
The house has been beautifully renovated and is bright and airy whilst still retaining plenty of the original rural architectural features - solid oak beams, exposed stonework in every room, original Charentaise fireplace, potager and small stone sink. The house has thick stone walls and shutters which keep it cool in the summer and warm and cosy in the winter.
It is professionally cleaned and all beds are made before your arrival. Towels are also provided.
The house can easily sleep up to 8 people. The mattresses are all new and very comfortable. Upstairs there is:
- a large double bedroom,(5m x 5.5m), with king size bed, wardrobe,bedside tables
with reading lamps, a wicker chair and small breakfast table.
- a large 2nd bedroom,(5m x 4m), with a double bed, a single bed, wardrobe, and
- a large walk-through bedroom /lounge area,(5m x 5.5m), has a single bed and a
comfortable, double sofabed.
The spacious downstairs lounge,(5m x 5.5m), which leads directly into the courtyard, has a 3 seater settee and a large 4 seater, bed settee,(for some extra flexibility in sleeping arrangements), a traditional open fire, TV/DVD player for playing DVDs, CD/MP3/radio player and a selection of DVDs, CDs, MP3s, reading books and board games. The upstairs bedroom /lounge area provides an extra seating area which is perfect for use as a teenage get-away or for a bit of extra privacy if 2 families are sharing the house together.
The large family dining kitchen has doors leading directly into the courtyard and neasures 5m x 5.5m. It has a table which seats 8, a full size gas oven and hob, microwave, large fridge/freezer, dishwasher and all the usual kitchen equipment, pots, pans etc.. that you would find at home. It has ample fitted, light wood cupboard units with a long worktop over, as well as a separate cooking and preparation area. Tea-towels are provided.
A utility room, off the kitchen, provides useful extra storage for your own large items such as bikes, pushchairs etc.
There is a spacious, modern shower room and toilet.
Everyone loves the courtyard, which is a paradise for sun-lovers, with 2 separate seating areas, one a raised area to catch the last of the evening sun. There are wooden tables and chairs, sunloungers and parasols. The brick built BBQ is safely positioned at one end of the garden. The pool is 12ft diameter and 4 ft deep - a welcome cooling off area in the hot summer months. A fabulous, private place for adults to while away a hot afternoon, or for young children to improve their swimming techniques in a safe and secure environment. There are removable steps for extra safety
There is private parking for 2 cars.
Basic items, such as herbs, tea and coffee, washing up and cleaning products are provided for your use. A bottle of wine and bottles of beer will be waiting for you when you arrive. At a small extra charge, we can arrange for a small amount of shopping to be waiting for you when you arrive.
The village has a shop with basic supplies, including fresh bread everyday. A pizza van visits the village twice a week and there is an excellent gourmet standard restaurant in the village.
Markets can be found in nearby towns and villages on almost every day of the week. The biggest in the area is at Rouillac and is held on the 27th of every month.
For more serious shopping, the pretty town of Mansle is 6 km away and has an excellent Tourist Information Office and a full range of shops, banks etc. An out of town shopping complex is just outside Angouleme,(20 mins drive), while at Angouleme itself, there is the usual modern city shopping experience.
The village has a train station with trains to Angouleme, which means that you can connect with the TGV train to get further a-field. Paris, for example, is around 2hours 30 mins away by TGV, whilst Bordeaux is under an hour away and Biarritz is 3 hours away.
You can choose to spend your days relaxing in the garden, take a dip in the pool, or relax at the many nearby river and lake beaches. You can cycle or drive along quiet country roads lined with fields of sunflowers and grape vines, through sleepy hilltop and river villages, visit a different market every day, explore the nearby historic city of Angouleme, take a day-trip to the Atlantic coast and its islands, Cognac and its distilleries, (Hennesey, Remy Martin etc..),Futuroscope in Poitiers, the modern zoo near Royan, nearby 'Monkey Valley' or the historic port of La Rochelle with its fabulous aquarium. The area has too many leisure pools and lakes to mention here.
Among the many interesting and pretty villages particularly worth a visit are: Tusson, Aigre, Charme, Villejesus, Montignac and Vars, (all within 15 minutes drive). The historic cities of Angouleme,(25 mins drive), Cognac,(1 hour drive), and a little further away, Saintes, Bordeaux and La Rochelle are all wonderful.
The fascinating Perigord village of Aubeterre Sur Dronne is a short drive away and well worth a trip.
There are lots of sporting opportunities in the area, with something for every age group, ability and interest.
- River and lake swimming, both within 5km at Amberac and Mallenville respectively,
are safe for small children. There is an excellent open-air pool, with flume, at
Mansle and an Aqualand at St. Jean d'Angely. A massive leisure complex, just
before Angouleme, has a lake for swimming and boating as well as a fabulous indoor
pool area with cascades, flumes etc, and an ice rink. The nearest beaches are
around Royan and La Rochelle
- The Atlantic coast is suitable for surfers, whether beginner or expert.
- Canoes can be hired by the hour, half-day, day or week from both Mansle and
- A large leisure area at Massignac,(under an hour drive away), has 2 lakeside
beaches and swimming areas, a sailing school with boat hire, a large adventure
park with trails suitable for 3 year olds to adults, bungee jumping, a bird
obsevatory, fishing areas and picnic areas.
- Fishing licences for the Charente river and the many lakes can be bought at
Mansle. A day fishing licence can be bought for the Massignac lakes at the tourist
centre at the entrance to the leisure park.
- Birdwatching opportunities abound, and even a casual walk around the countryside
turns into a birdwatchers paradise. More formal areas are along the coast and at
the leisure park at Massignac
- There are 3 Golf courses. The nearest is just outside Angouleme. Others are
near Montbron and Cognac.
