Details: La Paquerette is thelargest of three luxury cottages in the newly converted stables of a former farmhouse. Sleeps 6+
This very comfortable cottage is situated in the “7 Vallées” region, noted for pretty wooded valleys and trout streams, and just 1 hour from Calais. Its interior is light and spacious and provides 3 big bedrooms: 1 wheelchair-accessible double on the ground floor and 2 very large twin rooms on the upper floor (one of which has an additional double sofabed). There are two bathrooms, 2 separate WCs (1 of each adapted for disabled users) and a superbly equipped kitchen with dishwasher and microwave. The dining table extends to seat up to 10 guests and the spacious living room is equipped with UK satellite TV and radio. Other facilities include laundry, terrace, garden, barbecue, children's play area with swings, and private parking.
Shopping
Local shopping facilities include the market towns of Fruges (3mins) and Hesdin (10 mins). For more serious shoppers St. Omer with its Auchan and Carrefour hypermarchés, stylish boutiques, art and furniture galleries is only 25 minutes drive. Antique lovers will find a treasure trove in Montreuil (25 mins) including a weekly auction sale, while fashion junkies should make a bee-line for Le Touquet (45 mins) with its branches of Paris boutiques, smart cocktail bars and casinos.
For more adventurous shopaholics, Paris and Brussels can both be reached in about 2 hours by car and train.
Historic Sightseeing
Conflict and war has left its mark on the region and historians will not want to miss the battlefields of Azincourt (3 mins) and Crecy (30 mins). Azincourt, where, in 1415, the army of Henry V won the most famous victory in English history, has a fine new museum dedicated to the battle. British visitors welcome!
Elsewhere, in particular close to Arras, Albert and Bapaume (about 1 hr) there are some moving WW1 battlefield monuments and cemeteries. An outing to the monuments and preserved trench lines at Beaumont Hamel, Vimy, Thiepval and Ypres are particularly recommended, especially if your visit is around the time of Armistice Day (November 11).
William the Conqueror sailed for England from the pretty port of St. Valéry sur Somme, and the English held Joan of Arc there before her trial and execution at Rouen. Everywhere, historical sites and fine chateaux abound.
Sports and Activities
There's loads of activities for anyone remotely sporty, with horse riding, tennis, swimming, windsurfing, sand yachting and fishing all available at a number of centres within 40 minutes drive. Walkers and cyclists are well catered for with a wide variety of signposted itineraries and you may find the novel idea of taking a country walk with a donkey for company (and to carry the picnic) appealing.
Keen golfers will appreciate the choice of 11 top quality courses within an hour's comfortable drive.
For sun worshippers and families the fabulous beaches and dunes of the Cote d'Opale are not to be missed, and you can drive to EuroDisney in less than two hours.
