Historic Ironbridge
Located less than a mile and a short walk away, Ironbridge Gorge offers a unique chance to step back in time to an age when the pounding of steam hammers and the clatter of horse hooves were commonplace. Its series of museums, spread along the banks of the River Severn, pay tribute to what happened in this great valley two hundred-and-fifty years ago. The first iron wheels, the first iron rails and even the first steam railway locomotive were all made here, as well as the first Iron Bridge. Ironbridge was at the heart of the Industrial Revolution. There are several museums to visit and the Museum of The Gorge is the ideal place to learn about the history of the Severn. The original furnace used by Abraham Darby when he first smelted iron ore with coke is adjacent to the fascinating Museum of Iron, whist visitors can see a unique collection of the company's superb wall and floor tiles and can also watch them being made at the Jackfield Tile Museum, a former world centre of the decorative tile industry. The Coalport China Museum houses dazzling displays of two centuries of china. Once one of the country's largest porcelain manufacturers, with a worldwide reputation for fine china, the Coalport Museum now includes a range of exhibits tracing the history of the factory and the lives and working conditions of its workforce. Visitors to the Blists Hill Victorian Town can experience the atmosphere and way of life of a whole working Victorian community. Attractions here include a nineteenth century steam-operated pithead, a working foundry, a squatters' cottage, a chemist and many other Victorian shops, a schoolhouse and a bank, where you can obtain Blists Hill's own legal tender.
